United Way Director Attends 2008 Assets Learning Conference
Boise, Idaho – Melissa Nickell, United Way’s Community Impact Investments Director attended the 2008 Assets Learning Conference, September 11-13, 2008, in Washington D.C.. Nickell was awarded a conference scholarship from the Wal-Mart Foundation and was the only recipient from Idaho.
More than 1,200 asset-building advocates from leading financial institutions, community-based organizations, national foundations and think tanks, attended the conference. Highlights included sessions on Individual Development Accounts (IDA) and other matched savings programs, visits with legislators on Capital Hill, and the release of a national Assets Special Report which analyzes new data on household net worth at the start of the current credit crisis. United Way of Treasure Valley administers the Statewide Idaho IDA Program which helps low-income Idahoans save for a home, education, or a small business.
While in Washington, Nickell visited with Idaho’s Congressional Delegation including Senator Mike Crapo and Representatives Mike Simpson and Bill Sali and their staff, to share about United Way’s IDA Program and Free Tax Help Program for low-income families and individuals.
