United Way responds to President-Elect’s call for National Day of Service

Boise, Idaho—United Way of Treasure Valley, in conjunction with Idaho for Obama, is responding to President-Elect Barack Obama’s call for all Americans to plan, organize and participate in community service projects this Monday, January 19, Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“The National Day of Service is a fantastic way for people to get involved and share in this historic event,” says Sally Zive, President and CEO of United Way of Treasure Valley. “Idahoans have always looked after their neighbors, and we’re proud to be a part of a day that celebrates that spirit of community building.”

United Way has organized fourteen service projects at ten different agencies in the Treasure Valley. The events are staged throughout the day, and incorporate a wide array of community service opportunities for volunteers of all ages and abilities. Projects include winterizing homes for those in need, sorting food and clothing donations, a blood drive, sprucing up and renovating service facilities, children’s science education, reading to pre-schoolers and spending time with Veterans.

Local organizations participating in the Renew America Together: Commitment to Service project include United Way of Treasure Valley, Learning Lab, Boise Rescue Mission, Idaho Foodbank, Giraffe Laugh Early Learning Center, American Red Cross, CATCH, The ARC, Idaho State Veteran’s Home, Boys and Girls Club of Ada County, The Discovery Center of Idaho and the Caldwell Housing Authority.

To learn more about each project and to reserve a space, register here or contact Neva Geisler, United Way Director of Volunteer Engagement at 336-1070 ext. 122.

The registration deadline is Friday, January 16. Participation is limited to 300 volunteers.
