United Way of Treasure Valley announces $1.8 million in grants

Boise, Idaho – United Way awarded $1.8 million in grants this morning to 31 non-profit organizations working to improve the lives of people here in the Treasure Valley. The grants were announced at Albertsons/SUPERVALU headquarters, United Way’s top corporate donor for the fourth consecutive year.

The Community Fund Grants were awarded in three different categories: Education, Health and Income. A total of 48 programs, ranging from child care scholarships for low-income parents, to a mobile dental van to treat uninsured kids at school, to youth mentoring programs, received funding.

Nearly 60 programs applied for a United Way grant, totaling over $3.2 million in requests. This year’s grant awards range in size from $5,000 to $129,000.

The Community Fund is a pool of dollars donated to United Way through the Annual Community Campaign.

United Way facilitates an open, competitive process, overseen by community volunteers to award grants from the Community Fund. More than 80 volunteers participated this year and made the funding recommendations. The volunteers review each program application, attend on-site information visits, and evaluate every agency and program’s long-term viability, financial management, and community impact. This year, United Way grant investment volunteers invested more than 2,700 hours, the equivalent of $54,000 in labor, to ensure community dollars are invested wisely.

“Making these funding decisions is a rigorous process, one that brings together our community’s most committed experts and volunteers,” said Carl Arriola, CEO of Tates Rents and this year’s Community Impact Council Chair, who leads the investment process.

“The discipline and rigor involved in all phases of United Way’s Community Investment process is remarkable. Our dedicated volunteers give freely of their time and talent to ensure that gifts to United Way will help people right here in the Treasure Valley get back on their feet permanently and create lasting change.”

2009-10 United Way Community Fund grants were awarded in the following three impact areas:

Education: $803,562 – Helping youth achieve their potential.

EXAMPLES: Support for quality early education programs serving low-income children; programs that help low-income youth in their academic achievement; and enriching after-school and mentoring programs in neighborhood-based youth organizations.

Health: $399,500 – Promoting health and wellness

“United Way works to create opportunities for a good life for all by investing in programs proven to help people where they need it the most,” said Sally Zive, President and CEO of United Way of Treasure Valley. “Many of our neighbors are struggling right now to get by and we know that these investments can make a lasting difference in their lives and in our community.”

An additional $2.3 million in contributions to United Way of Treasure Valley will flow directly to more than 250 nonprofit organizations located throughout the United States. Individual donors designate these funds to specific agencies during United Way’s Annual Community Campaign.
