BSU Coaches Chris Petersen and Greg Patton, and a major grant award announcement highlight this year’s United Way Community Campaign Kickoff

Boise, Idaho – More than 600 people attended this year’s United Way Community Campaign Kickoff breakfast on Thursday, August 30th at 7:30 a.m. at the Boise Centre on the Grove. This year’s event took place on the same day as BSU’s first football game of the year against Weber State and the United Way breakfast served as a “kickoff” to the day’s festivities.

For starters, BSU football Coach Chris Petersen taped a special video welcome that was played at the event, and BSU Men’s Tennis Coach Greg Patton was this year’s keynote speaker. The title of his speech was, “It’s all about teamwork!” Coach Patton talked about how important teamwork is to being successful and reaching all your goals; both on the tennis court and in building stronger, better communities.

Other highlights of this year’s United Way Community Campaign Kickoff included a special performance by the BSU “Blue Thunder” Marching Band plus attendees had a chance to win a pair of tickets to the BSU – Weber State game that night, as well as some great Fiesta Bowl souvenirs personally autographed by Coach Pete!

The event also included a major grant award announcement to help get this year’s campaign started on a winning note. The Boise-based Jeker Foundation has awarded United Way’s Born Learning School Readiness Initiative a $100,000 grant. The funding will help support Born Learning and United Way’s efforts to increase the number of children entering school ready to learn.

Today’s event marks the beginning of United Way’s annual Community Campaign which runs from September to November. Last year’s campaign involved more than 300 Treasure Valley companies and donations from more than 18,000 individuals.
