PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

This year marks United Way’s presence in the Treasure Valley at 80 years.

It has been an incredible 80 years of change and growth for the communities we serve. We started out in 1928 as the Community Chest and over the years we’ve been known as the United Fund, the United Fund of Greater Boise, United Way of Ada County, Treasure Valley United Way, Canyon Area United Way, and in 2000 we combined forces to become United Way of Treasure Valley. Over the years we’ve had the pleasure of engaging many of our community leaders and company founders as Board members and Community Campaign chairs. Many of us remember the days of the great “giving thermometer” that annually sat in front of our State Capitol building marking, for all to see, the compassion and generosity of our community.

What happened in 1928 that made citizens step forward to help their neighbors? What is happening today that drives you to become a partner in changing lives for the better? Much has changed in the world – but generous Treasure Valley individuals and employers remain the reason we all call this place home.
We are proud to say United Way of Treasure Valley continues to evolve and to reach for effective solutions for our community – and with many of our original partners like the YMCA, the Salvation Army, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts. Today our partnerships have expanded to include government at all levels, school districts, law enforcement, and collaborative relationships with non-profits joining forces to address complex problems. And we’re finding new opportunities for more and more people to connect with the incredible rewards of volunteering. When people become engaged in community issues, they become powerful forces for social change.

We once relied solely on funds raised through the annual workplace campaign – which most people associate with United Way. But today we are diversifying our funding sources in order to address high priority community issues facing us all –school readiness so every child can be successful, substance abuse and mental health crisis issues, and income and asset-building tools for low-income families – with impressive results.

How many ways can we say thank you to this awesome, caring community? No matter the number, it will never completely express our gratitude. We’re looking forward to the next 80 years of helping, changing, and solving issues we face. Welcome aboard!

Most sincerely,

Sally Zive
