Family Activity Nights

Prior to camp, the children and their families participated in four weekly Family Activity Nights, a series of on-site parenting and ‘Parent and Child Together Time’ classes to help prepare families for the transition to school. Each of the sessions, taught by Learning Lab educators, had a theme including: “My Role,” which outlined the parents’ role as their child’s first and most important teacher; and “Talk, Talk, Talk,” which taught that parent-child talking and listening are important to literacy development and good lifetime communication skills. Classes were also taught in “Emergent Writing” and “Math Readiness.” Families set literacy goals at the start of each session and each family received a literacy bag and books to encourage at-home practice of activity night ideas. Participating families also received a nutritious dinner prepared by Life’s Kitchen.
