BOISE — United Way of Treasure Valley's board of directors announced Wednesday it has selected Derick O'Neill, a Boise native and community leader, to replace outgoing president and CEO Sally Zive effective Feb. 1.

Zive is stepping down after 11 years in the position to focus on health issues related to a recurrence of ovarian cancer. She has worked with United Way for 20 years, including four as director of Canyon County's organization before it merged with Ada County's to form United Way of Treasure Valley.

"Sally has been a remarkable leader for United Way as it has transitioned to its current focus on making positive, lasting change for individuals, families and the community," United Way Board Chairman Wayne Rancourt said in prepared remarks. "Sally's involvement in the process of identifying Derick as the right successor and community catalyst has been invaluable."

Zive will focus on health

Zive said she feels she needs to focus on her health and family for now, but hopes to return to United Way in a supporting role if her health allows.

"It has been a privilege to work with so many terrific people and organizations over the last 10 years. To see the concerted effort of so many in the valley toward making poverty in our community a thing of the past is indeed exciting and rewarding," she said. "Our focused work and partnerships in the areas of education, health and income is making a difference. I feel honored to have worked with so many wonderful people along the way and to know that through the generous contributions of time and treasure from so many thousands throughout the valley, lives today are better as a result."

O'Neill was recommended following a valleywide search by a panel made up of the United Way Board's executive committee and Zive. He is president and managing member of O'Neill Enterprises LLC, a developer of residential and mixed use communities in the Treasure Valley. He will vacate his current role upon assuming the United Way presidency.

O'Neill's background

O'Neill also serves as a trustee on the Boise Independent School Board and is past president of the Boise School District Education Foundation. He is a member of the Treasure Valley YMCA Board of Directors and has served with the Urban Land Institute, Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce, and Boise Parks & Recreation.

O'Neill has also been active in the past as a youth football coach.

"Derick's experience, personal and professional relationships, and character are tremendous assets to our community, and exactly what United Way needs at this important moment," Zive said. "I invite the community to join me in welcoming Derick to the United Way family and pledge to help him succeed for the betterment of our community."
