The Tocqueville Society is a national recognition program for local United Ways across America celebrating community philanthropy. It was founded in honor of the French historian Alexis de Tocqueville who, in the early nineteenth century, wrote about the American spirit of volunteerism.
"When an American asks for the cooperation of their fellow citizens, it is seldom refused; and I have often seen it afforded spontaneously, and with great will."- Alexis de Tocqueville, 1835
Because Tocqueville recognized, applauded, and immortalized the voluntary spirit that lives in America's heart, United Way honors those who contribute $10,000 or more through United Way with membership in the Tocqueville Society.
Membership in the Tocqueville Society is an opportunity to affirm your leadership and commitment to this community. It unites a growing group of civic-minded individuals creating a powerful legacy to help shape the Treasure Valley.
We will be introducing opportunities for members to be involved in shaping the future of our community by shaping the work of United Way. Tocqueville members will be invited to forums to discuss philanthropic trends and issues that face our community.
